We visited Christopher Bettig at his studio and asked him a few questions about his work and life in Los Angeles.

You originally studied painting in school, what was the evolution of your becoming so design focused?
To be honest, I’m not really sure.. I got my degree in painting and then moved to California shortly afterwards, and I’m sure that had a lot to do with it. I was always a big fan of simple shapes and bold colors, so I think the evolution came pretty naturally. Although, I do keep both worlds sort of separate.. my “fine art” is a bit different then my graphics.
You are a man of strongly held somewhat controversial opinion, where does all the soft, sunny work you create come from?
I was definitely raised to think for myself and to hold onto my beliefs without fear or shame, so I totally agree.. but as for the work I make, I think it’s there as well. I’m just as hyped about sunshine & waves as I am about being an atheist.
I’ve been witness to some of your amazing installations, any thoughts of moving more in that direction from a personal artistic prospective?
Thanks! Absolutely, the only problem, and I hate to say it, is the financial side of it.. I’m still not quite sure how installation artists make a living.

Do you have a favorite project that you’ve worked on?
I don’t know if I have a favorite. I really love working on a variety of things, I don’t think I would ever enjoy just working in one medium forever. That being said, I really enjoyed working on installations for Urban Outfitters, designing wrist watches for Vannen and the various solo art shows I’ve had would probably by the top ones.
Who would you say has been your biggest influence?
Charles & Ray Eames and Alexander Girard graphically & Jessica Stockholder art wise. Going back and forth from France and the US as a child also had a huge impact.

What is your first memory of 2K By Gingham and how has it been working with us so far?
Actually I remember a weird thing about 2K from back in the day when the first Yoshitomo Nara, Reas & Espo shirts came out.. I saw them a month later at Urban Outfitters but they had a different label in them. I think it was “Character Hero” instead of the “2K by Gingham” label. I never found out what the deal was with that.
It’s rad to be included in such an amazing roster of artists that I admire and luckily enough I’m friends with a good bunch of them.
Anything new you’ve been collecting?
Stamps in my passport!
I know you travel a lot for work, but if you could just disappear anywhere in the world for a little while where would it be? And why?
I love the mountains of Japan north of Nagano.. rad little hot springs towns and beautiful forests. Or maybe Antarctica.. I like cold places and the outdoors.
What is your dream project?
Designing a country’s flag.
What are your top three favorite things about living in Los Angeles?
The smell of jasmine everywhere in the spring/summer. Riding horses in the Hollywood Hills. The Griffith Observatory. I’ve been in California for 10 years. It’s my home. I love it here.
